UnjunkIt

Let’s UnjunkIt!

Whole Kids wants to unjunk kids lives! To grow up healthy, we believe that kids need real food that’s real good. But we know it’s not always easy to choose the right foods, especially when Big Junk Food corporations spend millions of dollars on marketing, advertising and sponsorships trying to persuade your kids otherwise.Did you know that obesity costs Australians $56 billion each year, and one in four Aussie kids are obese or overweight?

Did you know that obesity costs Australians $56 billion each year, and one in four Aussie kids are obese or overweight?

Enough is enough we say. And so do many health professionals, health organisations and community groups that care about our kids. We know junk food is unlikely to go away any time soon, but we’re fed up with the way Big Junk advertises and communicates to our kids.

As mums and dads, we have a lot of control over what our kids eat and drink, especially when they are young. Problems really kick in as kids grow up and the pervasiveness of junk food marketing starts to impact their lives and view of the world. And that influence can start very early on in childhood. Market research has found that children can recognise a brand logo before they can recognise their own name!

More research has found that the more junk kids see, the more likely they are to want energy-dense, salty, sugary or fatty foods. It’s not just TV advertising influencing choices – kids can be reached in a range of new and ever-changing ways, including social media and the internet, mobile apps and games, movie character licensing, sponsorships, supermarket checkouts, school fundraising, competitions and billboards.

Let’s recapture the magic of childhood as a special time in life that’s full of creativity, imagination, laughter and play.

It’s time for a change. It’s time to junk the junk. Join us and let’s create a junk-free childhood. To learn more, head over to our unjunkit.org.au website.
